I started writing this in January, but then something happened that made me reticent to come back to this so it’s half completed and therefore a light one this week. There’s not so much to cover as the black dance chart hasn’t changed much in seven days anyway.
According to a comment elsewhere in the magazine “Beat Dis” was released on the Monday of this week (presumably a re-release by Rhythm King and not the original pretending to be an import from the USA Mister-Ron version), so it‘s bothering the top of this chart.
And surely to bother the main chart in a way that would kind of upset the landscape of pop music, and with maybe the first mainstream sighting of a music related smiley entering the public consciousness. Shoom had co-opted that a few months prior, and Alan Moore’s Watchmen had used the branding in 1986. Bomb The Bass‘ interpretation probably pays homage to both, it‘s similar to the Comedian‘s badge but looks more like the classic Smiley than Dave Gibbons‘ re-interpretation.
Anyway, I digress somewhat. (And I wrote something more about this very subject about 10 years ago.)
There’s also a nice pic of Everything But The Girl here which I’m sure those involved may hope not to see again.
And here’s some music of this week, clumsily mixed. I was looking for something with a bit more bounce, so Tired of Getting Pushed Around fits the bill.
Brick – Dazz (The Latin Rascals DEF 12 Inch Mix)
Simon Harris – Bass (How Low Can You Go?) (Raggamuffin Remix)
Adonis – The Poke (Your Turn 2 Work Me)
Krush – House Arrest (The Beat Is the Law)
Liz Torres – Mama’s Boy (Club Mix)
Keynotes – Let’s, Let’s, Let’s Dance
Jellybean – Jingo (UK House Mix)

And, well, this is why I was sad to come back to finish working on this post. RIP Mark E. Smith.
