As previously threatened, Westbam. I seem to remember my first exposure to Westbam came with …And Party, one part Walking On Sunshine, one part Spank and a vocoder. Nothing really special at the time, but odd enough that I remembered the artist. After this came Monkey Say, Monkey Do (presented here in the New Beat remix) as particularly impressive and the follow up Saxophone with it’s infectious flip side, Alarm Clock. I believe Alarm Clock is built on top of a sample of Gang Of Four’s What We All Want and is, erm, somewhat of an inspiration to Weatherall’s My Bloody Valentine remix. Alarm Clock is probably also partly responsible for the big beat sound of the 90s.

Other notable releases at this time include Hold Me Back, The Roof Is On Fire and No More Fucking Rock & Roll, and it’s around here that my Westbam knowledge fades somewhat. He continued to release records at an incredibly productive rate, and around this time Mayday takes off as a celebration of rave culture in Germany.
